President Yahya Jammeh has executed 9 prisoners last Thursday.
The Civil Society Associations Gambia (CSAG) wishes to announce an inadvertent error on the list of the death row inmates executed by the Yahya Jammeh regime on the night of Thursday August 23rd, 2012. CSAG listed Abdoulie Sonko as one of the executed. We deeply regret this error. Instead, death row inmate Malang Sonko was the one actually executed; not Abdoulie Sonko. We apologize for the trauma this error may have caused to the family of Abdoulie Sonko and the entire Gambian family and we promise to be extra vigilant in such circumstances in the future. By the same token, we sincerely extend our deepest sympathy to the family of Malang Sonko and call on the entire Gambian public and the international community to reecho the condemnation of this barbarous act. This act of pure cowardice does not belong in any civilized society and Yahya Jammeh and his acolytes must be held accountable for these cruel and inhuman acts of brutality. To reiterate, CSAG apologizes to the Gambian public, our international partners and the international community for this name error provided under a climate of intense confusion and disbelief.
Once again, Abdoulie Sonko was not executed and is alive; instead, it was death row inmate Malang Sonko who was indeed executed by the Yahya Jammeh regime. This does not make this case of incomprehensible evil any less dumbfounding and utterly animalistic. We will promise to do better in order to bring you accurate information.
Thank you for your understanding.
The CSAG Executive
