Femi Peters, UDP campaign manager standing trial for illegal assembly

In the ongoing trial of UDP's campaigm manager, Femi Peters, the fourth prosecution witness had on Thursday tendered a rejection letter he claimed was proof of rejection by the Inspector General of police to the ruling APRC government's request to hold political rallies.

The alleged document, which the police Registrar, Superintendent Ken Mendy said was a 'rejection' by the Inspector General of police, was tendered in court as a direct response to defense counsel Ousainou Darboe's request last Tuesday.

Ousainou Darboe however said the document was faked; a claim Superintendent Mendy denied while under cross examination.

Darboe further challenged him to produce an application made by APRC, and to show where a rejection was made. To that, Ken Mendy only produced a document dated 23rd August 2001. But the APRC actually held a political rally on 17th August, 2001.

Darboe also asked why they did not reject the application before the rally. The prosecution witness, Superintendent Ken Mendy, said he did not know.

Defense lawyer Darboe then tendered the letter as an exhibit, which  was marked as 'Exhibit D3'.

Mr Darboe then put it to Ken Mendy that 'Exhibit D3' was faked, but the witness denied.

The witness also provided a rejected application by the Minority Leader of the National Assembly to the IGP, which the counsel tendered as an exhibit. It was marked as exhibit D2.

Ousainou went on to ask whether the 'Exhibit D2' was approved, and Mendy said that it was not. Darboe further asked why the application by the opposition was not approve. And again, Superintendent Mendy said he did not know.

Ousainou Darboe then put it to him that the application made by APRC was not from the party's campaign manager but from a small ward known as Takuligaye Youths, which the witness admitted.

The case has been adjourned till 22nd January, 2010.
