The Gambian President Yahya Jammeh has threatened to jail businessman Mr. M. Sumareh over a property dispute. He advised tribal Serahule elders to talk with Mr. M. Sumareh, a Serahule bussinessman residing in the United States to either abandon his argumentation of maintaing his warehouse located at Sting Corner along the Banjul express highway, or risk going to jail any time he sets his foot in the country.
President Jammeh issued this threat at a meeting with Serahule community leaders who went to the State House asking him to 'forgive' Mr. Sumareh over the dispute. Among the Serahule leaders at the meeting were Alagie Basiru Jawara, Alagie Momodou Musa Njie and former permanent secretary Mr. Musa Drammeh.
The president, our sources said, pointed out that the Department of State for construction intends to construct a new road, which he said cannot be done without demolishing Mr. Sumareh's warehouse complex. The president added that Sumareh had asked for a compensation of D8 million but that when the state wanted to pay the amount, the businessman changed his mind and decided to hire a lawyer to contest the matter in court.
President Jammeh told Serahuleh leaders that he had wanted to act immediately when Sumareh decided to go to court but that if he did, his actions would have been misconstrued as politically motivated because M. Sumareh had just formed a political party.
The Gambian leader then gave an ultimatum of three months to Serahule community leaders to convince Sumareh drop his legal case against the state, or else he as the head of state would take a unilateral decision on the matter which could adversely affect M. Sumareh.
