Gambian president Yahya Jammeh, says districts that oppose his government must expect no benefits from his administration

Press Release | GMC: IRRESPONSIBLE, ARROGANT AND CHILDISH STATEMENT BY YAYA JAMMEH

If you want development you have to join the majority and support me but if any area chooses to be with the opposition, let them go ahead and expect no benefit from my government. What I did for you, in the past 400 years of British rule [and 30 years of the First Republic] you were not able to get it." These words are attributed to Yaya Jammeh in the Observer of the 14th July 2010.

I strongly condemn this highly irresponsible and provocative statement from a person whose every utterance constitutes utter disgrace to our nation. The Gambia and all of its endowments, including entitlement to development resources are non-negotiable rights for all Gambian citizens and every settlement in The Gambia. A dangerous public declaration in the nature of the one above by the President carries the force of policy, just like the public declaration of murder against human rights activists in The Gambia. The above statement is yet the latest dismal evidence that the worst thing that ever happens to The Gambia is Yaya Jammeh, and should be reason enough for all patriotic Gambians to immediately close ranks regardless of political inclinations, to urgently save our country and people from this bizarre insanity.

It is crystal clear that Yaya Jammeh is in power exclusively for himself alone while ravenously raping the privileges that accompany the highest office. This is a person who sees power as a remarkable opportunity to pounce on people by brute force, intimidate, discriminate and if allegations are true also exterminate. As 2011 edges closer, the only thing so far Yaya Jammeh’s tour proves is that the opposition should brace for a war against a creature that will not stop at anything to stay in power ad infinitum.

Indeed the world is closely watching and monitoring. Yaya Jammeh shall be held accountable for anything unfortunate that may befall on any member of the opposition in any part of the world, including Femi Peters at Mile Two prisons. The evidence is gathering, mounting and shall inevitably catch up with those that traffic delight out of human suffering, torture and murder in our land, including those who protect and patronise them. Make no mistake, you may believe in your fanciful invincibility for now, but surely, surely there shall be an end.
